Ann Irwin

Hannah Watson

Parents:

• Birth*: Hannah Watson was born on 2 February 1765 at Carlisle, Cumberland, England; according to Quaker monthly meeting records for Carlisle. Their residence is given as Solport, Cumberland.¹
• She was the daughter of James Watson and Mary (?)
• Anecdote: Although there are many other alternatives for the birth of Hannah, this is the most convincing. Firstly, it is a Quaker birth record and we know the family were Quakers as shown by later birth records for their children. Also, in the Quaker births register book which lists all the children of William and Hannah, there is another entry above it for two children: "Jane Watson daughter of James and Mary Watson was born at Crossrigg 22nd of the 2nd Month 1771" and "Mary Watson daughter to James and Mary Watson was born at Crossrigg the 12 day of the 12 Month half past 7 at night 1772". This indicates a close association between the two families and gives a high level of confidence that this is the correct birth record.²
• Marriage*: Hannah Watson married William Little in April 1782 at Stapleton, Carlisle, Cumberland, England.³
• Married Name: As of April 1782, her married name was Little.
• Anecdote*: The FamilySearch indexes list two marriages in Stapleton, Cumberland:
  7 Apr 1782 William Little and Hannah Wilson
  8 Ap 1782 William Little and Hannah Watson.
  These are possibly the same marriage. Given that one of the witnesses to the birth of Hannah's first child was Mary Watson, I have assumed that the second marriage is correct.
  Correspondence from Daphne Kennedy identifies a third marriage: William Little and Hannah Forrester on 20 May 1783 at Bewcastle Church. They are buried at Stapleton St Mary (1811 and 1837 respectively).^3,2
• Anecdote: In the front cover of a register of Quaker births, marriages and deaths is written a complete list of the children of William and Hannah - obviously written after their last child was born in 1803. This is the source used for the birth dates of their children, except where an earlier record exists then this is used if there is a disagreement in the dates (as for their first son John Little). There is another birth record for Jane giving date of birth as 27 January 1788 in records for the Society of Friends. These records confirm family stories of the early Ward or Little family being Quakers.²
  
• Anecdote: Three of William and Hannah's children were born at Rackbridge in Stapleton parish. The location of Rack Bridge is at coordinates Latitude 55.028133 (North), Longitude -2.822300 (West).
• Residence*: On 8 March 1806 Hannah Watson and William Little lived at Breckonhill, Kirklinton, Cumberland, England, This should possibly be Brackenhill.⁴
• (Witness) Marriage: Hannah Watson witnessed the marriage of Elizabeth Wigham and John Little on 24 November 1813 at Wigton, Cumberland, England; parents given as William and Hannah Little, and William and Jane Wigham. The marriage was performed at a Quaker meeting house in Wigton.^5,6,7,8
  

Eliza Little

• Married Name: As of 2 January 1816, her married name was Holliday.
• Residence*: On 7 June 1841 Mary Little and John Holliday lived at White Close Gate, Tarraby, Stanwix, Cumberland, England.⁵

• Occupation*: Mary Little was a widow and an agricultural labourer on 30 March 1851.²
• Anecdote*: There is a possible burial 23 Jul 1855 at Stanwix, Carlisle. There are also two other possibilities at Holy Trinity Church in Carlisle in 1853 and 1855.⁶

William Carlisle McKay

Annie, Jean and Jack sent money to Len and Elsie McKay for music lessons for their daughter Florence.
