William Little

b. circa 1740, d. before 1813
Last Edited: 6 Aug 2016
  • Birth*: William Little was born circa 1740; based on age at death.
  • Marriage*: William Little married Hannah Watson, daughter of James Watson and Mary (?), in April 1782 at Stapleton, Carlisle, Cumberland, England.1
  • Anecdote: In the front cover of a register of Quaker births, marriages and deaths is written a complete list of the children of William and Hannah - obviously written after their last child was born in 1803. This is the source used for the birth dates of their children, except where an earlier record exists then this is used if there is a disagreement in the dates (as for their first son John Little). There is another birth record for Jane giving date of birth as 27 January 1788 in records for the Society of Friends. These records confirm family stories of the early Ward or Little family being Quakers.2
  • Anecdote*: The FamilySearch indexes list two marriages in Stapleton, Cumberland:
7 Apr 1782 William Little and Hannah Wilson
8 Ap 1782 William Little and Hannah Watson.
These are possibly the same marriage. Given that one of the witnesses to the birth of Hannah's first child was Mary Watson, I have assumed that the second marriage is correct.
Correspondence from Daphne Kennedy identifies a third marriage: William Little and Hannah Forrester on 20 May 1783 at Bewcastle Church. They are buried at Stapleton St Mary (1811 and 1837 respectively).1,2
  • Anecdote*: In the Quaker records there is a burial of a William Little, age 97 years, on 11 Jun 1783 (buried 13 Jun) in the registration area of Solport and Carlisle. Place of abode is Hallees. This could be a candidate for the father of William Little who married Hannah Watson, although there are many William Little's around at this time.3
  • Anecdote: Three of William and Hannah's children were born at Rackbridge in Stapleton parish. The location of Rack Bridge is at coordinates Latitude 55.028133 (North), Longitude -2.822300 (West).
  • Residence*: On 8 March 1806 William Little and Hannah Watson lived at Breckonhill, Kirklinton, Cumberland, England, This should possibly be Brackenhill.4
  • Occupation*: On 8 March 1806 William Little was a schoolmaster. This information came from the burial record of William and Hannah's son Thomas. Also noted was "not in membership" which probably relates to membership of the Quakers.4
  • Anecdote: William is noted as deceased on son John Little's marriage record in 1813.5
  • Death*: William Little died before 1813 at Cumberland, England.

  • Birth*: John Little was born on 13 December 1782 at Laversdale, Cumberland, England; Witnesses: Mary Watson and Betty Kindred.1,2,3,4
  • He was the son of William Little and Hannah Watson.
  • Anecdote: John Little's birth was recorded at the monthly meeting of the quakers, who recorded births but did not baptise. It appears that his birth was recorded at a number of different meetings, and the actual day of his birth is given variously as 13 Dec, 14 Dec and 30 Dec. The 13 Dec 1782 is the most frequent. All the records show that he was born at Laversdale in the parish of Irthington to parents William and Hannah Little.5
  • Anecdote*: On 31 May June 1808 John Little was give permission to bury his grandfather, James Watson, at Thornyland, the site of a Quaker Meeting House. Thornyland is in the parish of Stapleton and the meeting house (now a Grade II listed property) can be located at coordinates Latitude 55.056575 (North), Longitude -2.8502573 (West).
  • (Witness) Burial: John Little witnessed the burial of James Watson on 3 June 1808 at Thornyland, Stapleton, Cumberland, England; age 90 years, abode: Square.6
  • Residence: On 24 November 1813 John Little lived at Carlisle, Cumberland, England.7
  • Marriage*: John Little married Elizabeth Wigham, daughter of William Wigham and Jane Harding, on 24 November 1813 at Wigton, Cumberland, England, parents given as William and Hannah Little, and William and Jane Wigham. The marriage was performed at a Quaker meeting house in Wigton.8,9,10,11
  • Occupation: John Little was a schoolmaster on 24 November 1813.7
  • Anecdote: The marriage also occurs in non-conformist record indexes as having occured in Holme, Cumberland. We know they were Quakers and there is a Quaker Meeting House in Wigton. Wikepedia has the following information which may explain the Holme/Wigton issue: Abbeytown, also known as Holme Abbey, is a village in Cumbria, England. It was built around the former Cistercian Holmcultram Abbey, the nave of the church of which now serves the parish as St. Mary's Church. ...... The village is located on the main Wigton to Silloth road and has a small range of local amenities including a pub, post office and two small shops. The buildings in the village mostly date from either the medieval period, especially those associated with the former abbey, the Victorian era, where much of the village was concerned with the railway line to Silloth or more recently when a large number of houses were built at "Friars Garth". The village is located on the edge of the Solway Coast area of outstanding natural beauty and the Cumbria Coastal Way passes through the village.12
  • Occupation*: John Little was a schoolmaster in 1836.13
  • Will*: John Little left a will made on 12 May 1836 at Carlisle, Cumberland, England.13
  • Will/Adm Transcript*: This is the last Will and Testament of me John Little of Earl Street in the City of Carlisle School Master being of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding viz.
