  My 2nd great grandfather was Christopher Francis de Salis O’Toole. On 28 June 1851, at the age of 16, Christopher was indentured to the vessel Cornelius in the Merchant Navy. I am not sure how long he served in the merchant navy. According to his diary, he left England in 1857 and travelled to New Zealand in the Barque Palmyra. I haven’t found him on shipping list so he may have worked his passage to New Zealand. Christopher settled in Bluff working as the Sub Collector for Customs. He married Amelia Longuet Levy, on 28 August 1860 in Invercargill, Southland. They had 7 children.
