  • Anecdote*: John Lockyer leased the Drapers property in Rotherfield from Mary Barber of Tonbridge after her husband Thomas Barber died, leaving her with three yound children. Thomas Barber (1640-1683) was baptised at Rotherfield on 3 May 1640 and was distant kin to John Lockyer and they were of similar age so may have grown up together.
    Mary had to use Drapers to secure an income for her family and three months after Thomas died, in a document dated 29 January 1684, she leases the property to John Lockyer of Rotherfield for the sum of £6/10s per year for a period of 11 years. The document reads:

    Mary Barber of Tonbridge widow
    It is Agreed betwen Mr. Pauly and John Lockyer of Rotherfield for the Rentt of the Drapyers for John Lockyer to enter as Mickellmas Last and to Have A Leas for eleven yeares paying six pound & tenn shilling a yeare but Allso He the said John Lockyer is not to pay this Hallfe years Rent which is due between this Last Mich' and our Lady day but John Lockyer is to pay all the Taxes for this Hallfe yeare and so forwod: Allso he is to Have Ruftember [rough timber] for poostes and bars & gatts [gates] allso Six poosts to sett up for A Houfell [Hovel] or lodge and to leve itt Repaired & to Leve the Copises coppice] well fenced and A yeares groth : not for to plow Any ground for the Tarme [term] of the Leas and to Lop and to top All Trees which Have benn toped and no other and not to fill [fell] Any Timber nor timber tres and He is to pay for the first Hallf years Rennt betwene our ladiday and Mickellmas

    In the name of God Amen I Thomas Lockyer of Withiham in the County of Sussex Yeoman beinge at this time in good health and of sound mind and memory praised bee God desireinge to sett my house in order before I depart this transitory life knowinge the Certainty of death doe make and ordaine this to bee my Last Will and Testament in manner and forme followinge (That is to say) First and principally I commend my pretious Soule into the hands & gratious acceptance of Almighty God who gave mee my being And my Body I committ to the Earth to bee therein decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named Trusting in and through the alone meritts and Intercession of my most Blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ the Righteous for the free pardon of all my Sinns and to Inheritt Eternal life And as touching the disposal of all my Estate temporall which it hath pleased God to afford unto mee here on Earth I give and devise in manner following Imprimis I doe give and bequeath unto my dear & loving wife Mary one feather bead bolster pillows rug coverlett Curtens Bedsteadle and whatsoever to the same appurtaineth & used most comonly in the Parlour Chamber of my dwelling house And Alsoe my Great Chest there for her to have and freely to take away whensoever shee pleasethe Item I give bequeath and devise unto my Eldest sonn Thomas Lockyer and his heires All that my Messuage or Tenement & Lands with their and every of their hereditaments and appurtenances Containeinge by estimacion Seaventy Acres of Land bee the same more or less Commonly called or knowne by the name of the Hill Farme scituate in Withiham aforesaid where I now dwell To have and to hold the same premisses unto my said sonn Thomas Lockyer & his heires and assignes for ever Savinge Allwayes the Jointure of my said Wife Mary which shee hathe dureinge her life in and upon the said Messuage lands and premisses And full power for her peaceably and quietly to have and enjoy her said Jointure Item I give and devise unto my sonn John Lockyer & to his heires All that my parcell of land called Beechland and the Hereditaments and appurtenances thereunto belonginge which I purchased of Nicholas Hamond lyeinge att or neer Beechgreene in Withiham aforesaid Containeinge by estimacion twelve acres bee there more or less To hold the same Land with its appurtenances to him my son John his heires and assignes for ever Alsoe I give and devise to my said son John Lockyer & to his heires Executors administrators & assignes for ever All that my house & little tenement & about halfe an Acre of land thereunto belonging appurtenances which I lately had of John Durrant & was heretofore Dennisses lyeing & being in Withiham aforesaid now or late in the severall tenures or occupacions of Benjamin Andrews & of Avis & Doutch widdows or of some or one of them And alsoe all my right & title to the same premisses upon any account whatsoever Item I give and bequeath unto my two daughters vizt to Sarah now the wife of George Mills five shillings current money and to Jane now wife of John Bridgland gent five shillings of like money to be paid to each of them my said daughters one Moneth next after my decease by my Executors And lastly I make constitute and appoint my said two sonns Thomas Lockyer & John Lockyer joint Executors of & to this my last Will & Testament written in One Sheet of paper hereby Revokeinge all former Wills by me made or declared and to them my said Sonns Thomas and John Lockyer I give and bequeath all and singuler the rest of my Goods moveables Cattells & Chattells whatsoever not herein before disposed off for them my two sonns to have and enjoy equally desireing and alsoe requiring them to pay and discharge my debts my decent funerall Expenses and other charges incident to this my Will In Witness whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seale the second day of January in the Fifth year of the Raigne of our Sovereign Lord George by the Grace of God of Great Britaine France and Ireland King Defendor of the Faith etc Annoq Dom 1718 Thomas Lockyer Signed Sealed published & declared by Thomas Lockyer the Testator in the presence of us subscribing our names as Witnesses in his presence Sarah Turner her marke Ewerod Everest Richd Taylar

    Memorandum that I Thomas Lockyer of Withiham in the County of Sussex Yeoman being of sound mind and memory do this thirteenth day of February on the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and thirty two make and declare this present writing as and for a Codicil to be annext to my last will bearing date the second day of January Annoq Dom 1718 and desire the same may be taken as part of my said Will in manner following (that is to say) Whereas I have by my said will given to my eldest son Thomas and his heires my farm called the Hill farm in Withyham aforesaid and whereas I have since by Indenture of Lease bearing date the Nineteenth day of September Anno Dni 1727 lett the said Farm (among other lands) to my younger son John Lockyer his Executors and Administrators for the term of one and twenty yeares at the yearly rent of one and twenty pounds for the said Farm Now for preventing disputes which may happen to arise between my said sonns after my decease touching my said son Johns peaceably holding and enjoying the same Farm during the said Lease I do hereby give devise and bequeath unto my said son John Lockyer all those my lands containing twenty acres more or less called the Nine Acres the two Beechgreen Feilds and one Coppice To hold to him the said John and his heires untill my said son Thomas shall by good assurances in the Law well and sufficiently confirm the said lease so that the said John and his Executors and Administrators may peaceably enjoy the same during the residue of the term therein to come and after the said Thomas my son shall have sufficiently confirmed the said lease then I give the said lands unto the said Thomas and his heires any thing in my said will conteined to the contrary notwithstanding In witness whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and Seale the day and year above written
    Memorandum that before the sealing hereof I the said Thomas Lockyer do further give to my son John the further sum of [tear] pounds of lawfull money of Great Britain to be paid unto him by my said son Thomas out of and chargeable upon the lands given to him within six months after my wives decease witness my hand and Seale the day and year above said Thomas Lockyer Signed sealed published and declared by the said Thomas Lockyer as and for part of his last will and Testament in the presence of us who subscribed our Names as witnesses in his presence George Mills Jane Bridgland J Farmer
