• She was the daughter of Anne Barber.
• Anecdote: Alice gives her age as 25 years at the birth of her first son in 1878 (i.e Alice born c1853); 30 years on her marriage in 1887 (i.e. born c. 1857) and is said to be 89 years at her death in 1945 (i.e born c1856). The death certificate states she was 29 years when she married (i.e. born c.1858). So Alice was probably born sometime between 1853 and 1858.
• Name Variation: Alice Jane Barber was also known as Alice Jane Stephens.
• Anecdote*: DNA testing has led to the belief that Alice Jane Stephens is the (illegitimate?) daughter of Anne Barber. This discovery came about because DNA testing showed that descendants of Alice Jane Stephens have numerous matches with descendants of the siblings of Anne Barber. These DNA results together with the maiden name of Nichols and the discovery that Radford used the surname Nichols in the 1871 census leads to the conclusion that Anne Barber is the mother of Alice Jane Stephens.
  On her marriage certificate, Alice gives her mother's maiden name as Nichols. Her mother's other illegimate child, Radford Barber, is in the 1871 census as Radford B. Nichols. Radford was to later jump ship at Wellington, New Zealand on 14 Aug 1876.
  Information on Alice Jane's death certificate gives her arrival date in New Zealand as c1872, some years before Radford. She would have been about 16 or 17 years old when she arrived.
  It is also interesting to note that Annie's sister Elizabeth Barber also had an illegitimate child (Alfred born 1850) who she left with her parents when she emigrated to New Zealand in 1857. She married a few days after arrival and settled at Taranaki.

• Anecdote: Alice's step brothe Radford jumped ship at Wellington on 14 Aug 1876, probably to meet up with Alice.
