This is all the more poignant because I believe he might be the same person as a chap known as William Henry Charman who had been adopted by at birth, and had obtained a birth certificate for a William Henry Charman who was born in the same area at about the same time. Eva Lilys son spent his life believing he was William Henry Charman. Meanwhile the real William Henry grew up, married and had a daughter in the same area. Unfortunately the "real" William Henry's parents were killed by a bomb in Horsham in WW2 so the duplicate William Henry couldnt verify who he was. Even today, I can't prove that the duplicate William Henry was really Eva Lily's son.³

• Anecdote: Thomas's age at marriage appears to be 30 years, but the original parish register needs to be checked as the marriage certificate is not entirely clear; his age appears to be 30 years at first glance but it could also be 50 or 80 years. Thomas's wife, the widow Eleanor Morris, died in 1910 at Bird in Eye, Framfield and a Thomas Burgess, age 36 years, born Brighton, is found living at Bird in eye in the 1911 census. It has been assumed that this Thomas was Eleanor's husband. This does raise the question as to why a 30 year old man would marry a woman aged 69 years and vice versa! Thomas's father's name is given as Thomas Burgess on his marriage certificate but this may be false as his baptism shows him to be illegitimate and the father's name is not given.

• Anecdote*: There is an enlistment paper for a Thomas Burgess, born c1877 at Brighton, to join the 4th Dragoon Guard at Aldershot as a musician. He gives his age as 14 years and 5 months. He was discharged on 21 Oct 1892 as "not likely to become an efficient musician". Under "next of kin" is written "no relations". He served 1 year and 47 days.⁵
