• Anecdote*: The 1851 census gives Sarah's place of birth as Eastbourne. She was 73 years old and it is possible that someone else gave the enumerator her place of birth and got it wrong, as everyone in the family also has place of birth as Eastbourne. We know that Sarah married Thomas Lewis at Willingdon and they had their first child Edward baptised there. I believe that Sarah was born at West Firle daughter of Thomas and Mary Gladman because Thomas Gladman and Mary Nicholson were also married in Willingdon (Thomas Gladman of West Firle, Mary Nicholson of Willingdon) although they subsequently lived in West Firle. The common connection to Willingdon is the reason for making this assumption. However, the Henry Gladman who witnessed daughter Sarah Lewis's marriage in 1821 is a mystery and I would like to be able to place him in the family before being absolutely certain.²

• Residence: On 7 June 1841 Sarah Gladman and Thomas Lewis lived at Town, Eastbourne, Sussex, England, Thomas's wife is noted as "slept out, see Jones the butcher". In the census she is indeed to be found with Edwin Jones, the butcher, and his wife Mary and family.⁴
