  • Anecdote*: Frances Tubbs may have been born outside of Sussex. There is a Joseph Tubb who is a stage coach owner Brighton/London:

    There is also a baptism of a Frances Tubb on 15 Dec 1774 dau. Joseph Tubb at Lewes St John the Baptist sub Castro. This was the same year that our Frances Tubbs was married, so maybe they were brother and sister.
    Also, Tubb/Tubbs is not a very common name in Sussex - there are only 25 marriages for Tubb (and variants) between 1538 and 1837.
    Also, there are burials for Fanny Tubb 9 Sep 1790, and Joseph Tubb 17 Jan 1795, at Hartfield St Mary. Joseph's burial entry says "from Forest Row".1,2,3,4

  • Anecdote*: Martha Gunn came from a well-known family of fishermen and started work as a ladies' bathing attendant or "dipper" when she was a young woman in her twenties. She did not completely retire until 1814, when she was in her late eighties. Her long career as a "dipper" and her special relationship with George Augustus Frederick, the Prince of Wales (1762-1830) ensured that she became a local celebrity and the most famous "dipper" in Great Britain.2

  • Anecdote*: The death of a Nathaniel Gunn of Brighton was investigated by the coroner c1814 (the actual date is omitted but is in a group of coronial inquests in 1813 and 1814). The outome was that he "died by the visitation of God" - that is, a natural death.2
